Kinja thinks I’m a lonely, middle-aged dude. Or maybe even a lonely, middle-aged dudette, I suppose.
For the record, I’m married and under 30.

Well it looks like we now know what your search history entails.
You've been looking at Mercury Cougars, haven't you?

Guilty.

I get creeped out by targeted advertising, but at least it's sometimes services and products I'd consider. Getting ads for Miller Lite (I'm 20), Adam & Eve (I'm not in the market for that at all), or even new cars (again, I'm 20, I'm not going to buy an $80,000 Volvo) are just irrelevant and annoying.

The ones that really weird me out is when it shows a link and picture to the exact item I was looking at, usually on Amazon or Musician’s Friend. Also, I’m pretty certain Facebook thinks I’m gay.

I have been looking at Gorilla costume and boy’s clothes ads all week because of
this.

You might want to check your “Interested In” field on your profile. I kept getting ads for gay dating sites on Facebook even though I was listed as in a relationship with a woman. Turns out, somebody got into my account and changed my preference to men instead of women.

Maybe Facebook knows something about you that not even you know? Maybe you are a sleep-homosexual and you don’t even know it? Maybe your browsing habits are similar to a gay man? Maybe someone is trolling you?
Or most likely of all, it’s just an algorithm failure.

Honestly, I think it’s a combination of 2 of those. I have a fair amount of stereotypically homosexual hobbies. Which also means roughly half of my guy friends are gay. But in the other hand, I have just as many stereotypical “straight man” hobbies, and my Facebook shows that I’m married to a woman. Maybe I’m just breaking Facebook’s algorithms.

That’s called retargeting. When you were on Amazon or MF a cookie was saved on your computer. Amazon and MF (and others) pay google a fee so that when you go to a website that uses google ads and you have a cookie from Amazon etc., they will show you a relevant ad.

I get somewhat similar ones, but they are specifically for the town I live in. And since I’m only 18, it’s for “young professionals"

I know how they do it, but it’s still weird to see.

I’ve pretty much always had it blank, and it still is when I just checked. It just seems weird to put an answer when I’m married and not necessarily “interested” in any options...
So maybe they just think I’m bisexual.

Seriously, thanks for that post on the gorilla costume. I really needed a good laugh today, as it sucked big time.

What’s crazy, is now your posting of this ad, is in the place of the dating ad, on your own article!
